Karle named PCHS STAR student The following story first appeared in The Blackshear Times. Mark Karle's mother is Darlene Register Karle, formerly of Homerville. He is the grandson of Reid and Sara Register of Homerville. . Karle had a perfect score on the math portion of the SAT and is this year's STAR student at Pierce Comity High School. He is the third member of his family to earn the honor. Lewis' recognition is the fifth time in her 30 year career she has received the honor from one of her students. The STAR student is chosen annually based on the highest SAT score and on academic excellence among the senior class. Karle is the son of Chris and Darlene Karle of Blackshear. He has a sister, Kristy, and two brothers, Jeffrey and Jacob. Karle is president of the Pierce County High School Sound of Silver Marching Band and is section leader for the drums. He participates in the drama club, is vice-president of the Beta Club and is a member of the math team. He has also been involved in. the quiz bowl and mock trial teams at the high school. Karle is currently considering his options for college and has not decided where he will attend next year. He plans to major in computer science. Lewis taught Karle chemistry and physics in high school. "Ms. Lewis is a Very fun teacher," Karle says. "She's ve knowledgeable about the subjects she teaches." Karle says Lewis is "great at what she does." "She makes you feel very at ease and she makes you feel comfortable asking questions," he relates. "She knows what she is talking about." Lewis has taught for 30 years, including the last decade at PCHS. She will be retiring at the end of the school year. Prior to coming to PCHS, she also taught at Southwood Christian School, Coffee County and Ware Magnet. She has taught mainly chemistry and physics during her career. The educator says she is humbled by the honor. "I am honored Mark selected me," she says. "I really don't know that I have taught him anything. STAR teacher Anna Lewis and STAR student Mark Karle. He already has lots of knowledge." Lewis says Karle is a prolific reader and is always on the computer learning as much as he can. "There is no arrogance about him," she says. "He is always willing to help his classmates." The long-time educator says receiving the STAR recognition in her last year of teaching is a special honor. "It's like icing on the cake," she says. "I've had a very rewarding career teaching students." Karle scored 2,310 out of a possible 2,400 score on the SAT. He is currently ranked first in his class. The names Karle and Lewis could arguably be considered synonymous with Pierce County's ahnual STAR student/teacher recognition. For seven out of the last 10 years, a Karle or Lewis has been Pierce County's STAR student or STAR teacher. Mark Karle, this year's STAR student, comes from a trio of brothers who have ea/'ned the honor, dating back to 2004. "The designation sort of :runs ,in the family," Mark quipped. "We all worked very hard to earn it, though." Karle's oldest brother, Jeffrey, was the first brother to receive the honor in 2004. Jeffrey earned a bachelor's degree in astrophysics from Georgia Tech in Atlanta, He is currently working on his master's degree in physics with a concentration in astrophysics at the University of New Mexico. He is slated to graduate in May. Two years later, another of the ,Karle brothers, this time Jacob, earned the STAR student honors. Jacob is currently living in Athens. Kristy also excelled in academics, finishing third in her class. "I'm very proud of Mark, and all of my siblings," says Jeffrey, the oldest of the boys. Jeffrey speaks for his brothers, when he attributes the Karle brothers' success to their parents. "They've always encouraged us to learn about the things we'xe liked, particularly through reading," he says.
